Glorious Sunshine for the Vets Open

Over 50 tennis players (mixed pairs) entered this year’s Vets Open Tournament held at Penzance Tennis Club on Sunday 24th March. The weather could not have been more perfect with glorious sunshine all day! Di Hillage, the tournament referee divided the pairs into 5 leagues, so that everyone played at least 5 rounds. There were two categories of players – players with a minimum age of 35 whose combined age had to be either 80+ or 110+. The winners of each group plus closest runner up then went on to play in the semi finals. In the 80+ category semi finals Cesar Monteiro (Southampton) & Julie Chappell (Truro) beat Ian Hales (Staffs) & Kelda McNeill (Penzance), and Dave Forrest (Penzance) & Jackie Rice (Penzance) beat Paul & Linda Heckford (both Penzance). In the 110+ category semi finals Graham Brunton (Falmouth) & Susie Scorse (Falmouth) beat Bernard Hoskins (St Agnes) & Sally Ann Homer (St Agnes), and Ian Lovering (St Agnes) & Mandy Hardman (St Agnes) beat Richard Forbes (Penzance) & Helena Luke (Penzance). A large crowd watched the finals and some excellent tennis with exciting rallies saw the eventual winners in the 80+ Category Cesar Monteiro (Southampton) & Julie Chappell (Truro) and 110+ category Graham Brunton (Falmouth) & Susie Scorse (Falmouth). The First Service cafe served fabulous home made food all day and both players and spectators enjoyed sitting out on the terrace in the sunshine in what certainly felt like summer! Special thanks to Di Hillage and Brenda Charlton for running the tournament so efficiently and of course to our sponsors Cornish Locksmiths. Winners 80+ Category, Julie Chappell and Cesar Monteiro Winners 110+ Category, Susie Scorse and Graham Brunton Runners Up 80+ Category, Jackie Rice and Dave Forrest Runners Up 110+ Category, Many Hardman and Ian...

Record breaking auction night!

Penzance Tennis Club’s first Auction Night was a major success, raising the incredible sum of £2,307 towards the Court Renewal Fund! The clubhouse was full, and the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement. Just before the auction began Mara Forrest and her friend Bryher added two more balls to our fund raising gauge taking the existing total to £400. Then the evening began in earnest with our volunteer auctioneer, Barry Hocking from St Buryan making sure every lot achieved its maximum potential! We are delighted that every lot sold, most way in excess of our expectations. Four lots actually achieved over £100 each, so our thanks go to Suzie Sinclair and Alistair Till for their donation of 4 tickets to the Newlyn Filmhouse, Pat Shaw for a ride in one of his classic cars, and to Brett and Lil Dye for a 5 night stay in their luxury caravan at Goonhavern. The gold star of the evening has to go to Bryock for his promise to cook a dinner party meal for 6 lucky people, and this lot achieved a truly amazing £250. Huge thanks goes to the local businesses, members and friends of Penzance Tennis Club who donated generously to give us such excellent lots! Thanks also goes to our fund raising sub-committee of Tricia Smith, Dave Forrest, Dawn Roberts and Valda Mossman. Finally thanks to Barry Hocking who undoubtedly helped our bidders dig deep! Our next event will be a Race Night on Saturday 6th April so mark your calendars as this is always a fun night! Thanks to Mara and Bryher for adding two more tennis balls to our guage A well earned bottle of win was presented to Barry...
