IMPORTANT NEWSFLASH!
DUE TO THE CLOSURE OF PENLEE PARK THIS EVENING DUE TO THE EXPECTED STORM, TONIGHTS MIX IN HAS BEEN CANCELLED
Hello,
Please do take the time to read through this newsletter as there is a lot of information to share with you.
Importantly, it’s been another great week of tennis. You’ll be pleased to know the floodlights are all now completed and they make a fantastic improvement to the playing conditions!
Walking tennis
It was a wonderful day at the inaugural Cornwall Walking Tennis Championships!! Many thanks to all the players from @penzancetennisclub and @wadebridge tennis clubs who came and played. It was great to see so many players (and supporters) being brought together through Walking Tennis. Congratulations to Margaret (Wadebridge) on winning the competition. Finally a massive thank you to @tennis_cornwall_county for funding this competition and the amazing Keith Songhurst for helping to run it. We are already looking forward to next year. If anyone is interested in joining a Walking Tennis Group please contact our head coach, Ian Vidgen: ian.vidgen@hotmail.co.uk or leave your name with Kathy in the office.
Winter League
It was the first weekend for the Winter League. Congratulations to Penzance A Team who beat Penzance B Team 12-0. It was a high quality match with both teams playing some fantastic tennis. Keep an eye on the notice board for results and updates as well as information about the squads. We have had so many enthusiastic players who signed up but there is still time to put your name forward as a reserve.
Mix in
Evening numbers have dropped a little some evenings, due to the weather. However, those that did turn up actually found very pleasant conditions to play in and the tennis was greatly enjoyed by all. Incidentally, Wednesday night’s bar is now run on a volunteer rota. Thanks to all those that support this. Lunchtime mix in continues to be very popular and it is lovely to see so many people joining in.
Tennis Ladder
Results are always posted on the board and emailed out, so do take a look at how people are doing. It’s been a fantastic event to be part of already.
Juniors
Strength and conditioning training was added recently and it’s great to see the children enjoy the sessions
Although tennis will always be top priority, it is also nice to see the continued development of so many social activities.

Honesty box
As requested, an honesty box for drinks is now available. A big, brown box, you will find it located in the corridor. Please let others know if they have missed it on the newsletter. We’ve had some lovely feedback so far.
For your information, we are investigating changing the water fountain so that water is more easily accessible for todays requirements and protects the new flooring from spillages.
Onwards and Upwards
We really enjoyed receiving your feedback from the survey at the beginning of this year. We will be continuing to listen and respond to the needs of our members. What we would really like to do now is to form an Onwards and Upwards Committee who can both make suggestions to help steer our club forward and be part of future fundraising. If you like to be a part of this exciting group, please do contact me.
Volunteers
We have gained a few more volunteers, but would really like to encourage more to sign up to our two hours, every three month challenge. This will help us keep the bar open during the week. It is such a lovely atmosphere when the bar is open and it really lifts activities such as the Table Tennis club on a Tuesday evening. We would also like to set up a buddy system for new members to help them get settled in, so would appreciate volunteers for this too.
Finally, I believe there is so much we can achieve together so please do talk to me, or any committee member if you can help in any way. I am at the club several times a week and always take time to talk to people whoever I can, but I can also be contacted by email as below.
New members who join us say they do so because it’s a lovely, friendly place to be and myself and the committee couldn’t agree more. Many thanks for your continued support for the club.

15/09 Chairman Trevor Newborn steps down –
It is with a heavy heart I am writing to inform you that, after the recent committee meeting, Trevor Newborn has stepped down from his position as Club Chair.
Trevor is, and always will be, passionate about Penzance Tennis Club – a member for over 30 years, with over 25 years served on the committee and the last 13 years as Chair, he was instrumental in getting the funding for the clubhouse and courts from the National Lottery and the LTA. Trevor has worked tirelessly behind the scenes and has guided the club honourably through many ups and downs, leaving it in the enviable position it enjoys today.
The club is a real jewel of Penzance, and Trevor should be very proud of what he, with the support of all the committee over the years, has achieved on behalf of members.
I trust you can join me in thanking Trevor for all his efforts and we look forward to seeing him regularly at the club, hopefully introducing his beloved grandchildren to a lifelong love of tennis.
Brett Dye has kindly stepped up as the new Club Chair until the next AGM to be held on Monday 29th January 2024, when all club members are able to stand for election to any position on the committee of Penzance Tennis Club.
