A message from Trevor Newborn, Penzance Club Chairman
“It was a great pleasure to welcome Mel Jones as our unanimously elected President at the AGM on Monday 24th November 2014. Mel was the first person I met when I came to the club as a beginner on a cold winter Monday night, I think something like 22 years ago. He was running the coaching sessions and what I remember was his enthusiasm, positive welcome and warmth. I can say that all those traits are still just as strong now as they were then. He is a great Ambassador for the Club and a role model for all of us”.
A bit about Mel ….
Mel has been associated with Penzance Tennis Club since coming to Cornwall in 1980. He left a teaching career to help family members run what used to be Trevaylor Hotel and the quieter winter months gave him time to pursue his interest and passion as a writer. During this time Mel found time to write over 20 plays for Radio Four! In between these activities he found time to join the Tennis Club and indulge his great enthusiasm for the game, even helping Keith with coaching adult beginners (some of whom still remind him of that)! Mel became both Secretary and Chairman of the Club (not at the same time!) and was involved with key projects including the implementation of the floodlights and new courts being laid. When the new Club House was built Mel was asked to take over the running of the Cafe which he is still doing very successfully today.
Apart from tennis Mel maintains links with another popular Cornish sport as after twenty years of active refereeing rugby he is now an Assessor for the Cornwall Referees Society.
“It’s a great honour to be asked to be President of the Tennis Club and I look forward to presiding over our continued growth and expansion”.
I’m sure you’ll all join me in welcoming Mel in his new role.
