Fantastic Turnout for Penzance Vets Open Tournament!
A superb day of tennis played in glorious sunshine was enjoyed by all the players in Penzance Tennis Club’s Vets Open Tournament on Sunday. A fantastic entry saw 31 mixed pairs, including entries from as far away as Derbyshire, Oxfordshire and Southampton, playing in rounds before the semis and eventual finals. There were two categories of players – players with a minimum age of 35 whose combined age had to be 80+ and a 110+ category.
Play started at 10am and there were 3 groups of 5 (one of six) for both the 80s and 110s. Each pair played everyone in their group with a total of 5 games per match with a 7 point tie break at 2-2. The winners of each group plus closest runner up then went on to play in the semi finals.
Jon Roberts and Geraldine Baker (St Agnes) beat Tomasz Helman and Flora Gomez (Penzance) in one set 6-3
James and Carolyn Baker (St Ives) beat Cesar Romero (Southampton) and Dory Crellin (Truro) in one set 7-5
