Exciting finals day for Club Championships and the Triple for Frances Heale!
The Penzance Tennis Club Championships commenced on Sunday 2nd September with a round robin mixed doubles and there were some closely fought matches in the ladies and men’s singles and ladies and men’s doubles throughout the week. The weather was kind for the finals day on Saturday and the watching spectators were treated to some wonderful tennis! The results were as follows:

Saturday 4th August saw the end of another fantastic Open Tournament with superb tennis all week and a particularly gripping and exciting finals day!
Thanks to all our competitors and their supporters who have travelled from far and wide including Essex, Oxfordshire, Kent, Hampshire, Sussex, Derbyshire plus clubs from across Cornwall.
Special thanks go to Steve Wynn from Westcliff Lawn Tennis Club in Essex, now in his 23rd year, for another perfectly organized Tournament.

Penzance 69th Open Tennis Tournament starts today!
Penzance Tennis Club’s 69th Open Tournament begins today and this evening (Sunday 29th July), all competitors are invited to attend the President’s Reception at 7pm.
It is set to be a fantastic week of tennis with 154 players, 270 entries over 15 events. Thanks as always goes to our Tournament Referee Steve Wynn from Westcliff Lawn Tennis Club in Southend-on-Sea, who has run the tournament for the last 23 years! This year Westcliff are bringing 48 players/spectators and we also have entries from Oxfordshire, Kent, Southampton and Derbyshire! The Gold Award winning First Service Cafe and Bar will be open throughout the tournament with fresh cakes every day! There are also social events running throughout the week in the evenings so be sure to check the noticeboard and behind the bar.

Success for Sue Nash and Steve Cox in Lylie Young Tournament
Everyone that took part in the Lylie Young over 35s Tournament last Sunday had great fun and once again the weather was kind with glorious sunshine for a large part of the day.
The players (ladies and men) played as individuals earning one point for every game won in 20 minute rounds. After 4 rounds and a break for lunch the semi finals were played by Sue Nash and Steve Cox (winners) vs Suzie Sinclair and Mike Vandersluys (6-4) and Dawn Roberts and Chris Cox-Webber (winners) vs Sam Wardman and David Newberry (6-5).
An exciting and closely fought final saw eventual winners Sue Nash and Steve Cox beat Dawn Roberts and Chris Cox-Webber 6-5.
Thanks go to Tomasz Helman, tournament referee who did a great job keeping things running smoothly and to the First Service Cafe for keeping the players and spectators well fed!

GAME, SET AND MATCH TO LOCAL SCHOOLS AT PENZANCE TENNIS CLUB
Children from junior schools across Penwith came to Penzance Tennis Club last Thursday to compete in the annual Schools Tennis Tournament. There were two competitions, one for Under 8s and one for Under 11s. Each school team was represented by four players who played other schools in their division.
In a very close Under 8 competition Alverton School were the champions beating Five Islands School in the final. Nancledra School were third and only missed out on a place in the final by a single point.
The Under 11 competition was won by St Uny School with Five Islands School again coming second and Alverton coming third.
Tournament Director at Penzance Tennis Club, Sammy Bassett said “it has been a fantastic day for everyone involved. The standard of the tennis has been extremely high and the sportsmanship showed by the young players has been excellent.”
The Schools Tennis Tournament is part of the School Games programme organised by Neil Eddy at Mounts Bay Academy. Through this tournament Alverton, Five Islands and St Uny Schools have qualified for the county final in June where they will take on players from other schools in Cornwall.

Fantastic Turnout for Penzance Vets Open Tournament!
A superb day of tennis played in glorious sunshine was enjoyed by all the players in Penzance Tennis Club’s Vets Open Tournament on Sunday. A fantastic entry saw 31 mixed pairs, including entries from as far away as Derbyshire, Oxfordshire and Southampton, playing in rounds before the semis and eventual finals. There were two categories of players – players with a minimum age of 35 whose combined age had to be 80+ and a 110+ category.
Play started at 10am and there were 3 groups of 5 (one of six) for both the 80s and 110s. Each pair played everyone in their group with a total of 5 games per match with a 7 point tie break at 2-2. The winners of each group plus closest runner up then went on to play in the semi finals.

The First Service cafe served fabulous home made food all day and both players and spectators enjoyed sitting out on the terrace in the sunshine in what certainly felt like summer!
