COVID-19, Clubhouse and Courts Closed

To all Members
Following the Government’s announcement and unequivocal instruction (Monday 23 March) it is with heavy heart that I have to inform you that Penzance Tennis Club Courts and Clubhouse are closed forthwith.

Please do not attend the club at all until advised otherwise.

Meanwhile for any queries we will attempt to maintain the club email account

Keep yourselves and family safe during this unprecedented time.

Trevor Newborn, Chair Penzance Tennis Club

COVID 19 – Message from our Chairman

Since the Government’s statement on Monday 16th March, we have reviewed the Clubs activities, and are following Government and LTA guidelines and advice.

First Service Cafe will severely restrict its operations with immediate effect. It will remain open for the present but only for Teas, Coffees, Soft Drinks and light refreshments.

The bar will be closed this Wed/Thurs/Fri evenings18th – 20th March. After which openings will be further reviewed.

Coaching will continue for the present time but all Tournaments and large gatherings for the time being are suspended.

Previously planned social events are all postponed and will not take place, we hope to re-schedule them. These are The Race Night 4 April, the Quiz Night 18 April and the Spring Fayre 2 May.  However, the 50/50 Club will still start on 1 April with all entries to be at the tennis club by 31 March, and maybe YOU will be the first winner.  If you want to enter and can’t get to the tennis club, you can mail your cheque to the club, or contact Tricia Smith on 01736 367087, or email

The Clubhouse and courts will remain open, with cleaning and maintenance enhanced as per advice provided each day.

It is currently the intention to keep the clubhouse and courts open for as long as possible, however this could change at any time. We may have to close the clubhouse completely, but hopefully the courts will remain useable for the duration, but even that may change

The situation will be monitored regularly in view of changing circumstances. We hope to reopen fully in due course but that could be many months away.

Thank you for your understanding at this difficult time.

Regards, Trevor Newborn, Chair Penzance Tennis Club.

Hat-trick for Holly at Club Championships

The club championships took place over the last two weeks with the finals taking place on Saturday 28th September and Thursday 3rd October. There were five events starting with a full day of play on Sunday 22nd September for the mixed doubles. This is always a popular event with a large entry and four groups played everyone in their table (7 games) and the winners of each group then played the semi finals. The rest of the events were played out throughout the week. Some play was hampered by heavy rain including the finals day which meant that the final event, the mixed doubles, had to be played on Thursday 3rd October. Despite more heavy rain on that day everyone played on despite getting soaked!

It was a great week and spectators were treated to some superb tennis throughout the tournament and despite the inclement weather on both finals days the tennis was thrilling to watch with some fantastic rallies.

Well done to everyone who took part with a particular well done to Holly Drew for her hat-trick!

The results:

Men’s Singles

Cladio Domizi beat Dave Forrest 6-1, 6-4

Ladies Singles

Holly Drew beat Zoe Body 6-2, 6-1

Ladies Doubles

Mixed Doubles

Photo Gallery from Penzance 70th Open Tournament

What a fantastic week for our 70th Open Tournament! Despite rain early in the week our fantastic referee Steve Wynn kept the matches going so we didn’t fall behind. There was superb tennis throughout the week from all our entrants including our youngest entrants aged 15 to our oldest entrant, Mario at 83!

Thanks to those players who visited us from Essex, Kent, Oxford, Southampton, London and Derbyshire! Some have been visiting us for over 20 years and have become old friends!

Thanks to Des Hosken and his tournament committee for organising a fabulous week of great tennis, fantastic entertainment and of course amazing food from Mel, Sylvia and the team.
