Entry for Club Championships 2017 now open

Due to our Tennis Manager Martin Coates leaving in early September the Club Committee has taken on the role of Club Tournament Organiser. In order to have Club Champions in 2017 at all we have decided to change the format slightly from last year. On a positive note we have reduced the entry fees to £3 per event but, unfortunately, we will have to go without the Over45s Vets Mixed Doubles for 2017. The tournament will be held over ONE WEEK (starting Sunday 17th September) only and please note the tournament schedule. In fairness to the organisers please do not enter the tournament if you are not available on the weekends/evenings stated. Should numbers be so large that the organisers have to amend the schedule we will let you know in good time. An entry form is attached (click here) and there are copies of the entry form in the spinner in the club’s foyer. As always please stick to the closing date and do not enter without payment. Many thanks and good luck with your...

WONDERFUL OPEN FOR CLUB’S 70TH YEAR

Having just celebrated its 70th birthday Penzance Tennis Club staged its 68th Penzance Senior Open Tournament from Sunday, 30th July to Saturday, 5th August. As always the popular event attracted a great number of players from local clubs as well as from other parts of the country. Referee Steve Wynn from Essex who has been overseeing the Penzance Open for 22 years now successfully managed to run the 16 competitions without a hitch. The weather was fine for most of the week – apart from Wednesday when rain made play difficult and unpleasant. However, in true British style, competitors braved the elements and got on with the matches. A number of highly rated players competed in the main events. The top seed this year was last year’s mens singles winner James Hardiman (Avon). While locals were backing Penzance Tennis Club’s Ben Lakeman James proved again too strong. In the final he constructed his points well forcing Ben into the defensive. James seemed never in trouble and eventually won in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. The ladies singles final was an all-Cornish affair. Truro’s Clare Hudson played a steady and accurate game beating last year’s champion, India Rojano from Padstow in a close match 7-5, 7-6. Clare had not won the Penzance Open since 2006. She teamed up with Hayle’s Zoe Lee in the Ladies Open Doubles. The pair won the first set 6-3 against Truro’s Emily Wicks and Claire Tresidder but then ran out of steam and lost the second set 6-0. The deciding championship tie-break also went to Wicks and Tresidder after a most entertaining battle. The Mens Open Doubles was won by the strong Peters brothers from Redruth. Penzance’s Ben Lakeman and Janner Bindiren put up a great fight but Nick and Chris Peters came through 6-0, 1-6 1-0 (6). The Mixed Doubles Open champions of 2017 are Emily Wicks and Charlie Newman. They beat Clare Hudson and James Bassett 6-2, 6-4. Altogether eight members of Penzance Tennis Club made it to Finals Day. Daphne Luke won the Ladies Handicap Singles for the fourth time beating club mate Dawn Roberts 6-3, 6-2. She then teamed up with Jackie Rice from Penzance to win the Ladies Handicap Doubles. Daphne’s mother Helena also played with Jackie. They won the Ladies O55s Doubles in straight sets 7-5, 6-2. In the Mens Handicap Singles Tomasz Helman (Penzance) lost to young Essex star Aaron Hilsum. Penzance’s Sam Wardman and doubles partner Cesar Monteiro from Southampton narrowly lost to the Oxford pairing of Duncan Todd and Kim Buffham in the Mixed Seniors Doubles. Chris Birchley and doubles partner Nick Williams (London) comfortably won the Mens O55s Doubles. With over 270 entries the 2017 Penzance...

Ladies Team Tennis Success!

TEAM TENNIS SUCCESS Four players from Penzance Tennis Club travelled to Bath last Sunday to compete in the AEGON Ladies Regional Team Tennis event held at Bath Tennis Club. Having left Cornwall early in the morning the Penzance team duly arrived at the beautifully located Bath Club for 12 noon to play four singles matches. In the searing Spring heat all four Penzance players won their singles in straight sets. In the two doubles matches that followed the singles the Cornish contingent did just as well, again winning in straight sets. Not having lost a set all afternoon the Penzance team left Bath victorious with an amazing score of 12-0. Team captain and driver for the day Helena Luke was delighted, particularly as the team had lost the first match of this season’s AEGON Regional Ladies competition versus Knowle at home. This away win was a great achievement. The next AEGON Regional Ladies match will take place at East Dorset (Bournemouth) on 21 st May, followed by a home match versus Taunton on 4 th...

BIGGEST TURNOUT RECORDED AT PENZANCE TENNIS CLUB FOR THE LTA ROADSHOW

It’s been a fantastic week of tennis due to our involvement with this amazing initiative linked to the LTA. We have visited over twenty schools this week with the LTA Tennis Roadshow in the Penwith area. This led to a great opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate the event with a Big Festival Weekend being delivered at Penzance Tennis Club on the Saturday and Sunday. It was game set and match to the sport with a record turnout of over 300 children and adults visiting the club, spending hours on court and hitting hundreds of tennis balls. This has gained many new members for the club as people signed up for membership and coaching courses on the day. Sunny weather blessed us throughout the week and Phil Leighton at the LTA, working with Penzance coaching team, did an amazing job. They were supported by the club’s tennis leaders and parents keeping everyone active and having FUN. We were all very grateful for the wonderful refreshments provided by Mel and his team at the Cafe.  The Club would like to thank everyone in the community who joined in on the day and especially the support of the local schools that made this such a special event.  This was a great week for the club offering free tennis to everyone and it was a great way to encourage more people down to Penzance to take up the sport and hopefully stay involved. In all my time at the club I have never seen so many people on our courts having fun at one...

GLORIOUS VETERANS OPEN AT PENZANCE TENNIS CLUB!

A fantastic day of tennis was enjoyed by all as Penzance Tennis Club staged the 28th Veteran Mixed Doubles Open Tournament on Sunday. The popular annual event, sponsored by Cornish Locksmiths of Penzance, regularly attracts competitors from all over the country as well as local clubs. Play at Penlee Park got under way at 10am. Originally a record number of 52 players were to take part but due to illness one doubles pairing had to withdraw. This left 2017 referee Di Hillage with 50 players in two age groups. Matches took place in glorious sunshine on all seven courts. As always the tournament was divided into two age categories with the first one being the “combined age 80” (no player under 35 years of age) and the second “combined age 110” (no player under the age of 50). The two age groups were then put into two sections and the winners of each section played each other in the final. This year’s chosen format was a match of 8 games, with each couple collecting as many points as they could. Both age groups were tightly contested until the very end. The 80s final featured last year’s champions Carolyn and James Brown from St Ives Tennis Club and the new doubles pairing of Samantha Wardman (Penzance) and Cesar Monteiro (Southampton). A very close match, watched by a large number of spectators from the club’s patio, ended in the St Ives pair winning 5-3 to retain their 80s group title. In the older age category Penzance Tennis Club stalwart Elaine Bassett, partnered by Rod Maskrey (Derbyshire), took on a formidable St Agnes pair in Bernard Hoskins and Sallyann Homer. The visitors proved to be stronger in the end, winning 7-1 to become the new 2017 champions. A wonderful day of tennis finished around 5pm when sponsor and club member Steve Francis of Cornish Locksmiths presented the prizes. The club is very fortunately to have such a dedicated sponsor and he has already confirmed his commitment to the tournament for 2018. Both referee Di Hillage and the club’s Vice Chair Joyce Taylor did a brilliant job running the event and getting the many players organised. A big thank-you to all who helped with the tournament and supported it on the day....
