South West Outstanding Achievement Award for Tricia Smith!

On Tuesday 3 July at The Championships, Wimbledon, the winners and finalists of the British Tennis Awards 2017 rallied together for the official awards ceremony. This included Penzance Tennis Club Member and Honorary Treasurer Tricia Smith, who won both the County and Regional Award for Outstanding Achievement (front row, 3rd in from right). The British Tennis Awards are a celebration of the thousands of people who go above and beyond to support the game, from grassroots initiatives to supporting Britain’s biggest major events. Featuring fourteen categories, the awards recognise the people and places who help keep tennis ticking across the nation. In the autumn, a record-breaking 1,460 nominations were received by the LTA to recognise the outstanding efforts of volunteers, coaches, officials, teachers and many others playing a vital role in growing the game. After a rigorous judging process at both County and Regional levels, an expert panel made up of LTA, Tennis Foundation and Sport England, volunteers and former British professional player Naomi Cavaday, got together to decide the national winners and finalists. Tricia became a playing member of the club in 2010 and soon after volunteered to become the Honorary Treasurer bringing her accounting expertise to the role. The Role Profile for the Honorary Treasurer asks the holder to commit to 2 to 3 hours per week throughout the year, but Tricia has worked far in excess of that commitment. Her contribution does not stop there. Tricia is ever present to welcome new players to the club, introducing them to other members at the weekly social tennis sessions helping them to quickly embed themselves as members. She has also run several fun tennis tournaments at the club some of which have been held on New Years Day. Trevor Newborn, Club Chairman commented “Tricia is the epitome of an ‘unsung hero’. Her contribution to the life of the club goes unrecognised by many. Yet, by contrast, her impact has been profound, ensuring the professional, sound, financial management of the club and consequently the promotion and enjoyment of tennis at this site by those across the region and beyond. Her legacy will be felt for many years by the club and all of its users because of her outstanding achievement”. For the complete rundown click here. Tricia and her partner Julian meet Judy Murray!
