Ian Vidgen – SW Coach of the Year!

Ian Vidgen – South West Tennis Coach of the Year 2021 Ian Vidgen, Head Coach at Penzance Tennis Club has not only won the LTA 2021 Cornwall “Coach of the Year” but has also secured the South West regional title whilst now being considered for the National Short List. Launched in 2015, the LTA Tennis Awards celebrate the thousands of individuals involved in tennis – from the 25,000 volunteers, to the 4,400 coaches and 940 officials. They also highlight the incredible achievements of 20,000 schools, 2,700 clubs and over 9,700 LTA approved tournaments in helping to grow the sport.Progressing from the county stage of the awards, this year’s regional winners will now go forward to be considered for the national shortlist in each of their respective categories. LTA CEO Scott Lloyd said: “The LTA Tennis Awards acknowledge the extraordinary contribution of the individuals and venues that help us open tennis up, bringing new fans and players to the game. Now more than ever, it is important we celebrate their contributions and hope that tennis can rally together to get through this very challenging time.” In a challenging year for all, during both lockdowns Ian maintained grass roots links by innovatively adapting to the situation. His self-drive and determination along with his sense of selflessness saw him alone in his back garden creating a series of free online virtual tennis coaching courses for all ages and abilities and aligned with his use of social media forums he has opened up the world of tennis to a whole new audience within the local community. Trevor Newborn, Penzance Tennis Club Chairman commented: “Ian is an outstanding Head Coach for Penzance Tennis Club. His natural charm, people skills, use of information technology, man-management and self-motivation are a great advantage in securing enthusiasm and commitment from both members and the wider community. The way Ian’s passion for coaching crosses age and ability demographics is impressive and he has recently started a new disability tennis course where participants look forward to sessions at the club. His junior coaching assistants are greatly benefitting from his leadership and for his being such an exemplary role model in politeness. His coaching ethos is to encourage, see people grow, improve, but most importantly have FUN!” Over the past few months Ian has been interviewed 3 times on Radio Cornwall where he promoted the physical and mental benefits of tennis to the whole of Cornwall and never one to stand still at the end of 2019 Ian was wholly responsible for Penzance Tennis Club being awarded a Queens Club Foundation grant of £1,330 to enable Ian and his team to deliver free tennis lessons to hundreds of children in local...
